Storm Ashley has caused travel chaos in Scotland, prompting ScotRail to issue warnings of disruptions due to “strong winds and rain.” As the first named storm of the season wreaked havoc, 47 flood warnings were issued across Scotland, with winds reaching speeds over 80mph. Train services throughout the country were severely impacted by flooding and debris on tracks, leading to speed restrictions on many routes. Although Met Office weather warnings have been lifted, 16 flood warnings remain in place in Scotland, as reported by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
Despite the improving weather conditions, ScotRail advised that the aftermath of Storm Ashley would continue to disrupt train services, with potential cancellations. In a statement, ScotRail urged passengers to stay informed about their journeys as services may still face delays, alterations, or cancellations. The Met Office warned of persistent gale force winds that could lead to fallen debris and trees affecting commuters at the beginning of the week. Transport Scotland’s Head of Transport Resilience, Ashleigh Robson, emphasized the widespread disruption caused by Storm Ashley, affecting ferry, rail, and flight services. Robson highlighted the priority of passenger safety in making decisions to cancel services and advised passengers to plan ahead.
The storm also impacted other modes of transportation over the weekend, with CalMac canceling most Sunday sailings and flight diversions at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. Police Scotland advised drivers to avoid unnecessary travel anticipating widespread road disruptions. Fortunately, the weather conditions are expected to improve later in the week as Storm Ashley moves northeast. However, the Met Office cautioned that the respite may be short-lived, with the possibility of unsettled weather returning towards the end of the week.
