North Lanarkshire Council is calling on the community to nominate their sporting heroes for induction into the prestigious sporting hall of fame at Ravenscraig’s Regional Sports Facility. The current hall of fame boasts legends such as the Lisbon Lions, John Higgins, and Sir Matt Busby, among others. The call for nominations aims to expand this esteemed list with new inductees next year.
Jim Logue, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, expressed the importance of celebrating the outstanding sporting achievements of local individuals. He highlighted the significance of honouring the region’s rich sporting heritage and inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams through initiatives like the sporting hall of fame.
Nominations are open to individuals from diverse sporting backgrounds who have excelled either as competitors at national or international levels or have made significant contributions to their sports in coaching, leadership, or support roles. To nominate a sporting hero, submissions should include a brief description of their achievements and reasons for their induction into the hall of fame. Nominations can be emailed to sporthof@northlan.gov.uk by Thursday, December 12.
The inaugural event in 2017 saw 12 sporting greats inducted, ranging from football and swimming to boxing and athletics. Subsequent years have seen more remarkable figures added to the hall of fame, including world champions, UEFA super cup winners, and Paralympians. A judging panel will convene to decide on the new inductees, continuing the tradition of recognising local sporting excellence.
The council’s initiative serves to shine a light on the incredible stories of sporting heroes in North Lanarkshire, inspiring and motivating both current and future generations. The hall of fame not only celebrates individual achievements but also fosters a sense of pride and community spirit around the region’s sporting legacy.
