The latest report from the Centres for Control, Disease and Prevention (CDC) has uncovered shocking findings aboard some of the filthiest cruise ships sailing around the United States. Live maggots, a dead bird, and “thick brown residue” around a beer tap are just a few of the disturbing issues that were discovered.
Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration cruise ship has been identified as the dirtiest cruise ship, with the CDC rating it as unsatisfactory. The Vessel Sanitation Program conducts inspections to ensure that cruise ships maintain sanitation standards and prevent the spread of gastrointestinal illnesses. Inspections are carried out unannounced while a ship is in a US port, with scores ranging from 0 to 100.
In a September inspection, the Hanseatic Inspiration scored just 62, well below the satisfactory threshold. Violations included maggots on a decaying bird, insects in food areas, improper food storage, and chaotic pot wash operations. The CDC noted inadequate monitoring of food processes and unsafe practices in food preparation areas.
In response to the report, a spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises emphasised their commitment to the health and safety of guests and crew, stating that they immediately took steps to address the violations. Margaritaville at Sea’s Paradise was another cruise ship flagged for unsatisfactory conditions, with issues like malfunctioning equipment and absent soap in handwashing stations.
While some cruise ships barely met the satisfactory level, such as Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess and Carnival Cruises’ Carnival Breeze, others scored a perfect 100, including Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas and Carnival Cruises’ Carnival Spirit. MSC Cruises, although satisfactory, mentioned further enhancements to their health and sanitation protocols.
