The family of Scots dad Paul Taylor has expressed their devastation after his death, following the guilty verdict of his teen killer for murder. Jack Crawley, 20, was found guilty of murdering the 56-year-old father-of-two at Carlisle Crown Court. Taylor had been missing from his home in Annan since October 18, 2023, until his remains were discovered in remote woodland near Carlisle on May 2. The court heard that Taylor had met Crawley for sex on the evening of his death. The two met at a secluded spot on the outskirts of Carlisle, where Crawley brutally attacked Taylor with a mallet, resulting in fatal injuries. Crawley proceeded to burn Taylor’s body and bury the remains at Finglandrigg Wood near Carlisle, where they were later found by police.
In a statement released through Cumbria Police, Taylor’s family described how their lives had been shattered by the loss of their “gentle and loving” husband and father. They mourned the loss of their family unit and the future they had planned together. Crawley, who admitted manslaughter but denied murder, claimed a carjacking gone wrong led to Taylor’s death. However, forensic evidence dismantled his explanation, including his attempt to disfigure Taylor’s body with a mallet postmortem. Despite Crawley denying any fascination with serial killers, the court delivered a guilty verdict. Senior Investigation Officer Ian Hussey praised Taylor’s family for their dignity during the investigation and hoped the verdict offered them some closure.
