A tragic helicopter crash in Houston has claimed the lives of four individuals and resulted in the destruction of a radio tower, officials have confirmed. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, is currently under investigation by authorities.
The helicopter crashed in Houston’s Second Ward, located east of the city’s downtown area, shortly before 8 p.m. The aircraft had taken off from Ellington Field, approximately 15 miles away, according to Mayor John Whitmire. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the crash involving a Robinson R44 II helicopter.
Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz stated that the private helicopter, carrying four people including a child, may have collided with a cable or the tower. Fortunately, there were no individuals on the ground at the time of impact. The identities and ages of the victims have not yet been released.
Firefighters from a nearby station promptly responded to the crash upon hearing the impact. While area residents remained unharmed, the scene was described as a “terrible accident” with multiple casualties and significant damage to the tower and helicopter. Some residents experienced power outages due to the crash.
The swift actions of emergency responders prevented further damage to nearby residences, with only the tower being affected by the crash. Officials are urging residents in the vicinity to report any findings on their properties that may assist in the ongoing investigation.
