Writer Olivia Nuzzi and New York magazine have decided to part ways following revelations of a personal relationship with a political source during the 2024 campaign. The magazine announced on Monday that after conducting an internal review and investigation by a law firm, it found no issues with Nuzzi’s reporting accuracy or bias. However, both parties agreed that it was best to go their separate ways.
In a statement posted on its website, New York magazine praised Nuzzi’s talent as a writer and expressed pride in publishing her work during her nearly eight years as their Washington correspondent. The publication wished her the best in her future endeavours. The decision to part ways came after reports emerged that Nuzzi had a personal digital relationship with a source, which was first reported by the newsletter Status and later by The New York Times.
While the source involved was not explicitly named, reports cited Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the individual in question. However, Kennedy denied any substantial involvement, stating that he had only met Nuzzi once. David Haskell, the editor in chief of New York magazine, informed staff members that Nuzzi disclosed that the relationship began in December after her November profile of Kennedy was published. The relationship reportedly ended in August.
Nuzzi acknowledged in a statement to Status last month that the communication with a former reporting subject turned personal earlier in the year. She clarified that during this time, she did not report on the subject or use them as a source. Nuzzi expressed regret for not disclosing the relationship sooner to avoid any appearance of conflict, apologizing to those she may have disappointed, especially her colleagues at New York magazine.
The publication noted that had they been aware of the relationship, Nuzzi would not have been allowed to cover the presidential campaign. Both parties agreed to part ways even though no issues were found in Nuzzi’s reporting integrity. Despite the end of her tenure with New York magazine, Nuzzi’s writing prowess and dedication were acknowledged, highlighting the impact of maintaining journalistic standards and transparency in the field.
