American Airlines is trialling a significant change to its flight boarding process that could have an impact on passengers. The airline is introducing new technology to crack down on line-cutting, ensuring that passengers board according to their assigned zones.
For first-class passengers and elite members, the boarding process is typically smooth and efficient, with shorter wait times and more overhead bin space. However, passengers in economy class often face longer queues and a higher chance of having to check their carry-on luggage.
To address the issue of passengers disregarding their designated boarding zones, American Airlines is testing a new technology that can identify a passenger’s zone when they scan their ticket. This technology has been tested in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Tuscon, Arizona, and will soon be implemented at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.
In a statement to The Independent, American Airlines explained that the new technology aims to ensure that customers receive priority boarding benefits seamlessly, while also enhancing the overall boarding experience by providing better visibility of the progress to the airline’s team.
The airline has reported positive outcomes from the testing of the technology so far. Passengers attempting to board before their designated zone are now being denied entry, even if gate attendants do not visually check their ticket for the correct zone assignment. The system automatically flags any attempt to skip zones during boarding.
Some passengers have taken to social media platforms to express their opinions on the new technology. While some admit to having cut the line in the past and are now facing consequences, others have criticised line-cutting behaviour, labelling it as a problem in the travel experience.
American Airlines follows a specific boarding hierarchy, with ConciergeKey members, first-class passengers, active duty US military personnel, and AAdvantage Executive Platinum travelers being amongst the initial groups invited to board. Subsequent groups include AAdvantage Platinum Pro, oneworld Emerald, AAdvantage Platinum, oneworld Sapphire, AAdvantage Gold, oneworld Ruby, AirPass, Premium Economy passengers, AAdvantage Executive cardholders, and those with priority boarding access.
The introduction of this new boarding technology by American Airlines signifies a shift towards a more controlled and orderly boarding process, aimed at enhancing the overall travel experience for all passengers.
