Denying cancer cells Brazil nut ingredient could halt spread of disease – study

A recent study has found that denying cancer cells a key ingredient found in Brazil nuts could potentially halt the spread of triple negative breast cancer. The research, funded by Cancer Research UK, highlights the role of selenium, an antioxidant abundant in Brazil nuts and commonly found in everyday foods such as meat, mushrooms, and cereals, in the progression of this form of cancer.

Triple negative breast cancer is known to be challenging to treat, but the study suggests that limiting the antioxidant effects of selenium could hold the key to controlling the disease, particularly its spread to other parts of the body. While selenium was previously thought to aid in fighting cancer cells, the research revealed that cancer cells, especially when sparse and away from cell clusters, depend heavily on selenium for survival.

Published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, the study conducted by the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow showed that interfering with the metabolism of selenium in isolated cancer cells could lead to their demise, particularly those circulating in the blood seeking to metastasize to the lungs. This breakthrough discovery raises hopes for the development of new treatments to prevent the spread of triple negative breast cancer.

Dr. Saverio Tardito, the lead researcher from the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute and the Centre for Cancer Research at the Medical University of Vienna, expressed optimism about the potential impact of the findings. He highlighted the importance of finding a treatment that disrupts the uptake of selenium by cancer cells to prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of the body, ultimately saving lives.

With around 56,800 individuals in the UK diagnosed with breast cancer each year, approximately 15% are diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. This type of cancer can be linked to faults in the BRCA genes, which increase the risk of developing certain cancers, including breast cancer. Dr. Sam Godfrey, Science Engagement Lead at Cancer Research UK, emphasised that research like this could revolutionise the treatment of triple negative breast cancer and improve patient outcomes.

Notably, Lisa Bancroft, who underwent preventive surgery to remove both her breasts due to a genetic predisposition to cancer, expressed her support for the research. At 32 years old and cancer-free, she acknowledged the transformative effects that innovative research can have on individuals facing aggressive forms of cancer. Ms. Bancroft’s personal experience underscores the importance of advancements in medical science in providing hope and additional treatment options for patients.

Research such as this study offers a promising outlook for individuals diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, paving the way for potentially life-saving interventions to curb the spread of the disease. As medical science continues to advance rapidly, there is growing optimism that breakthroughs in cancer research will significantly impact how aggressive forms of cancer, like triple negative breast cancer, are managed and treated in the future.
