Surfer dies after being impaled by swordfish in Indonesia

A tragic incident has struck the surfing community in Indonesia as a 36-year-old Italian surfer lost her life after being impaled by a swordfish. Giulia Manfrini, hailing from Turin, was enjoying the waves in the Mentawai Islands when the swordfish leaped towards her, piercing her chest. The Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra Province are renowned for their picturesque waters and challenging waves, making them a popular surfing destination.

Despite the courageous efforts of her partner, local resort staff, and medical personnel, Manfrini could not be saved. James Colston, who co-founded a travel agency with Manfrini, expressed the heartbreaking news on Instagram, stating that she succumbed to her injuries. Manfrini, a beloved figure in the surfing world and a former snowboarder, had fulfilled her dream of merging her love for surfing and travel by establishing AWAVE Travel.

Lahmudin Siregar, acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, disclosed that the swordfish’s unexpected attack left a two-inch deep wound on Manfrini. Despite being swiftly taken to a nearby clinic, she passed away shortly after. Colston described the incident as a “freak accident,” believing that Manfrini perished while pursuing her passion in a place she adored.

Manfrini’s Instagram followers, numbering 22,000, were deeply saddened by the news, as she often chronicled her surfing escapades on the platform. Tributes poured in from her colleagues and her hometown’s mayor, Fabio Giulivi, expressing shock and helplessness at her untimely demise. One of her admirers noted, “You surfed life and travelled the world doing what you loved most. Live enjoying life to the fullest and die doing what you love most.”

Known as “Surf Frother” among her peers for her exuberance on the waters, Manfrini’s passing adds to a series of recent tragedies in the surfing community. Just a month prior, surfer Jorge Alvarado met with a fatal head injury while surfing in Daytona Beach, Florida. The surfing world mourns the loss of these two talented individuals, highlighting the inherent risks involved in pursuing such a thrilling sport.
