‘I was delighted to lose 22lbs before holiday – until the reason was discovered’

Edita Jucaite, a dental nurse, was elated to see 22lbs melt away without extra effort as she prepared for a dream holiday, attributing her weight loss to a busy work schedule and social life. However, her joy turned to alarm when a health scare emerged. She noticed unusual bruising after a cosmetic procedure, prompting her to undergo a full blood test. The results revealed a devastating diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), a type of blood cancer that progresses slowly.

Edita’s story underscores the importance of recognising early signs of leukaemia, such as unexplained weight loss, bruising, fatigue, infections, paleness, night sweats, and bone pain. Despite initial disbelief at her diagnosis, Edita embarked on chemotherapy and transitioned to the cancer drug Imatinib. Regular check-ups are now crucial for monitoring her condition, bringing anxiety and reflections on the uncertain future.

Although forced to cancel her holiday, Edita, supported by her partner Paulius, eventually made the trip after completing treatment. Her experience has motivated her to raise awareness about leukaemia symptoms to prompt timely medical intervention for others in similar situations. Edita encourages anyone experiencing unexplained weight loss or bruising to seek medical advice promptly.

In the UK, where 27 new leukaemia diagnoses occur daily, early detection is vital in improving survival rates. Edita’s journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and hope needed to navigate life-changing health challenges.
