Energy bill advice this winter from warm home discount to free electric blankets

The winter months are fast approaching, and with that comes the challenge of higher energy bills for millions across the UK. Ofgem’s energy price cap increased by 10 per cent on 1st October, pushing the average household bill to £1,717. Additionally, vulnerable pensioners are facing their first winter in decades without the £200-300 winter fuel payment as Labour continues to scale back the measure.

A recent survey conducted by YouGov and National Energy Action (NEA) revealed that half of UK households are planning to ration their energy use this winter. Charities are urging the government to provide more support to households as the cost of living continues to rise. NEA chief executive Adam Scorer expressed concern over the increasing energy debt and inadequate support available to households.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial to be aware of the support and advice available to help mitigate rising energy costs. Government support is one avenue for assistance, with initiatives such as the warm home discount offering a one-off £150 discount on electricity bills for eligible households. The household support fund, extended by Labour’s Rachel Reeves, provides financial assistance to vulnerable households through local authorities in England.

For low-income pensioners struggling with heating costs, the winter fuel payment can provide up to £300 towards bills, but eligibility criteria have become stricter under the new Labour government. Energy providers are also obligated to help customers struggling with bills, offering payment plans and support. Companies like Scottish Power, EDF, and Octopus are providing additional assistance, with Octopus and OVO even offering free electric blankets to vulnerable customers.

Making small changes to improve energy efficiency at home can also lead to significant savings in the long run. Simple measures such as insulating hot water pipes, draught proofing, and ensuring efficient appliance usage can contribute to reducing energy costs. Heating controls, such as room thermostats and programming devices, can help regulate energy usage and prevent unnecessary expenses.

Consumer champion Which? has launched a home energy planning service to help households create personalised plans for improving energy efficiency. By taking proactive steps and utilizing available support, households can navigate the challenges of rising energy costs this winter.
