First picture of man ‘stabbed to death’ at Hamilton community centre – Daily Record
A man allegedly stabbed to death outside a community centre in the middle of the day has been named locally. William Copland, 36, died inside Hamilton’s Burnbank Centre yesterday afternoon. Another man, 59, was also allegedly attacked and rushed to hospital. His condition is unknown. Cops today revealed they have launched a murder probe and a 56-year-old man has been arrested. Officers remain at the scene but police say there is no ongoing threat to the public. One of the dead man’s relatives wrote online: “RIP William Copland” alongside an image which stated: “Can I ask why the world is cruel”.
A local source said: “Wullie’s family has been through a lot recently and this has understandably left them devastated.” It’s understood an altercation happened on the street before William staggered inside the Burnbank Centre. It came just shortly after the area was busy with young children leaving primary school. Officers remain in the area and there are some road closures in place on Whitehill Road and Purdie Street. The closures are likely to remain in place until around midday today to allow investigations to be carried out.
Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area. Images from the scene on Tuesday morning show the area taped off. The large cordon is surrounded by multiple emergency service vehicles. Superintendent Richard Taylor said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public. We have an increased police presence in the area as we understand this could be a very upsetting and worrying time for the local community. Anyone with concerns is asked to speak to these officers.”
