IMF’s economic view: A brighter outlook for US but still-tepid global growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recently released an updated economic forecast, showing a brighter outlook for the United States while predicting tepid growth globally. The IMF maintained the global growth forecast at 3.2% for 2024 but made adjustments for specific regions.

For the US, the IMF expects the world’s largest economy to grow by 2.8% in 2024, slightly lower than the previous year but an improvement from earlier predictions. Strong consumer spending, driven by increased real wages, has been a key factor contributing to growth. However, the IMF anticipates a slowdown to 2.2% in 2025 as the government aims to address budget deficits through measures like spending cuts and tax hikes.

In contrast, China’s growth is projected to decelerate from 5.2% in 2023 to 4.8% in 2024 and further to 4.5% in 2025 due to challenges in the housing market and weak consumer confidence. European countries using the euro are expected to see modest growth of 0.8% in 2024, with Germany facing stagnation primarily due to manufacturing and real estate issues.

Global inflation is on a downward trend, with a forecast of 5.8% in 2024 and 4.3% in 2025, providing central banks like the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank with room to lower interest rates. Despite this positive development, the IMF warns that efforts to reduce government deficits may hinder economic growth in the foreseeable future.

Geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and China, could also impact global trade efficiency according to the IMF. Nevertheless, global trade volume is expected to improve in 2024 and 2025, following a modest increase in 2023. India’s economy is forecasted to slow down slightly to 7% growth in 2024, while Japan and the UK are projected to see growth rates of 0.3% and 1.1% respectively.

The IMF’s thorough economic assessment provides valuable insights into the varying growth trajectories of major economies around the world. The global economic landscape remains complex, with challenges and opportunities influencing growth prospects across regions.
