Inheritance tax already up 10 per cent as Reeves looks to squeeze levy in Budget, official figures show

In the latest official figures released, it has been reported that inheritance tax payments have surged by 10 per cent, indicating a substantial increase as Chancellor Rachel Reeves aims to extract more funds from the levy. The data from HM Revenue and Customs reveals that payments to the Treasury have risen by £4.3 billion in the six months since April. This amount is £400 million more than the corresponding period in the previous financial year.

There are concerns that Reeves’s proposal to raise the tax in the upcoming Budget could disproportionately impact middle-class homeowners. With the tax currently generating around £7 billion annually for the Treasury, there is ongoing debate on how to maximise revenue from what critics often refer to as the “death tax.” Despite only 4 per cent of the population being liable to pay this tax, it consistently ranks low on voters’ preferences. Experts suggest that frozen thresholds and escalating property prices are leading to more estates falling within the inheritance tax bracket.

As the Autumn Budget approaches, speculation is rife that inheritance tax may undergo revisions to boost government revenue and address the fiscal deficit. While the specific changes remain uncertain, the complexity of inheritance tax laws offers various avenues for adjustments to enhance tax collection. Nicholas Hyett, an investment manager at Wealth Club, highlighted the significance of inheritance tax as a revenue source for the government and the potential consequences of aggressive tax hikes.

Hyett emphasised that while focusing on inheritance tax might seem politically expedient in the short term, it could have detrimental long-term effects. The intricate rules governing inheritance tax provide flexibility for the government to explore alterations that could affect a minority of individuals but potentially trigger economic repercussions.

Both the Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs have been approached for comments on these developments, but responses are pending. The ongoing discourse surrounding inheritance tax underscores its importance as a revenue stream and highlights the complexities inherent in tax policy adjustments. As the government navigates these decisions, the implications for taxpayers, particularly homeowners and estate holders, remain a focal point of discussion.
