Specialist Scottish Police Officers Prepared to Tackle Firework Troublemakers on Bonfire Night
Specialist police officers in Scotland are gearing up to prevent attacks by troublemakers with fireworks during this year’s Bonfire Night celebrations. These public order officers, who have received special training, will be dispatched to assist local police teams in dealing with incidents related to fireworks. The initiative by Police Scotland, known as Operation Moonbeam, has been put in place in response to a surge in disorder around Bonfire Night in recent years. Last year, the force reported an unprecedented level of aggression and violence towards officers, with 62 personnel sustaining various injuries from fireworks being thrown at them.
Operation Moonbeam was officially launched at Glasgow Green along with efforts by Crimestoppers and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to deter the irresponsible use of fireworks. Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs, who is leading Operation Moonbeam, condemned the hostile and violent behaviour witnessed last year, primarily directed at police officers by adults associated with organised crime. He emphasized the serious consequences for those endangering the lives of emergency service workers and the public, stating that perpetrators will be identified and held accountable.
Members of the public are urged to report any criminal activity or suspicious behaviour that could pose a threat to communities. The aim is to ensure Bonfire Night is a safe and enjoyable occasion for everyone. By working together with the police, the public can help make a positive difference.
In summary, with Operation Moonbeam in full swing, Scottish police are taking proactive measures to safeguard officers and the public from firework-related incidents on Bonfire Night. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, community members, and partner organizations are crucial in promoting a safe and harmonious environment during the festive season.
