Bulldozers are set to move in to demolish houses on what has been labelled as ‘Scotland’s most fly-tipped street’. Tannahill Road in Paisley has long been plagued by rubbish and rat infestations, leading to the decision to tear down 51 blocks of empty council houses. The street, once known for its pristine appearance, fell into disrepair over the years as neglect forced residents to leave one by one.
Renfrewshire Council has approved a £630,000 contract to begin the demolition work, which is expected to last a year. Former residents have bid emotional farewells to their old homes, with memories flooding back as they visit the site for the last time. Teresa McDonald, who visited her family’s former house, was moved to tears by the nostalgia of faded wallpaper and familiar furniture.
As the demolition progresses, the Ferguslie Park area is set to see the construction of over 100 new homes by Renfrewshire Council. Terry McTernan, chairman of Ferguslie Community Council and a lifelong resident of the area, described the demolition as a mix of regeneration and sadness. While acknowledging the positive impact on the community, he also highlighted the bittersweet feeling of seeing cherished memories being erased.
Ferguslie Park, previously named as Scotland’s most deprived area, is undergoing significant changes with the hope of revitalising the community. Despite the challenges faced in the past, the residents have shown resilience, particularly during the pandemic, by coming together for the greater good.
