A new study has revealed 25 ways to beat the winter blues, with helping others identified as a key factor in boosting happiness levels. The survey, commissioned by energy drink company BOOST, found that engaging in acts of kindness can significantly improve one’s mood. To encourage this positivity, BOOST has partnered with charity Re-engage to launch the Christmas Call Companion volunteer initiative, where younger individuals can provide companionship and weekly phone calls to lonely older people during the festive season.
Anjna Mistry, Brand Leader at BOOST, emphasised the importance of helping others by stating, “Itβs clear from the research that Brits are searching for small ways to get a boost of positivity, and nothing gives you a boost like helping others.” Tom Oakes, Head of Growth at Re-engage, highlighted the value of intergenerational connections, with older individuals benefitting from conversations with younger people to stay connected and engaged with the world.
The survey also indicated that happiness is contagious, with 35% of respondents believing that a smile can uplift their spirits. Common factors contributing to feelings of melancholy included money worries, weather conditions, aging, health concerns, and being stuck in a monotonous routine. However, the study found that individuals have various methods to instantly boost their mood, with simple pleasures such as a walk in nature or a hug from a loved one ranking high on the list.
The Top 25 ways identified in the study to enhance one’s mood include activities like enjoying a sunny day, receiving a random act of kindness, or simply assisting others in need. BOOST and Re-engage’s Christmas Call Companion campaign offers an opportunity for individuals of all ages to volunteer as telephone befrienders for older people experiencing loneliness during the holiday season.
