Chicago has been crowned the “rattiest” city in the US for the 10th consecutive year, according to a recent report by pest control company Orkin. The city’s abundance of alleys provides the perfect breeding grounds for rodents, who thrive on human-generated trash. These pests are known to seek shelter beneath subway tracks and near underground pipes, leading to mass breeding.
Following Chicago, Los Angeles secured the second spot on the list, with New York City coming in third. Notably, these three cities have maintained their positions in the top three since 2017. New York state is home to a significant number of rat-infested cities, including Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.
The winter months force rodents to seek warmth and shelter indoors, potentially leading them to invade homes. Rats can spread diseases to humans such as Leptospirosis, Salmonellosis, LCM, plague, and typhus, posing health risks.
John Kane, Orkin National Accounts Entomologist & Quality Manager, highlighted the structural damage caused by rodents, including chewing through wiring, which can increase the risk of fires. Orkin’s ranking is based on residential rodent treatments conducted from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024.
