McDonald’s Shares Plummet as E. coli Outbreak Hits Burgers
Following an E. coli outbreak linked to its hamburgers, McDonald’s has experienced a significant drop in its market value. Shares plummeted by up to 6% during morning trading on Wednesday, compounding the stock’s decline overnight. The fast-food giant’s market worth has decreased from over 225 billion US dollars (£174 billion) on Tuesday to around 215 billion US dollars (£166 billion).
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a food safety alert on Tuesday after reporting 49 illnesses across 10 states associated with McDonald’s quarter pounder burgers. The outbreak led to one fatality and the hospitalisation of 10 individuals. Notably, McDonald’s outlets in the UK and Ireland have not been impacted by the situation.
According to the CDC, all affected individuals had eaten at McDonald’s before falling ill, with many specifically mentioning consuming quarter pounders. While the particular ingredient responsible for the illnesses remains unidentified, investigators are focusing on the slivered onions and beef patties in the hamburgers.
In response to the outbreak, McDonald’s has voluntarily removed the slivered onions and beef patties used for quarter pounders from stores in affected states. Consequently, the quarter pounder product is temporarily unavailable in some regions. McDonald’s USA president, Joe Erlinger, assured consumers of the company’s commitment to food safety, stating that necessary actions had been promptly taken to address the issue.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by large food corporations in ensuring the safety and quality of their products. As McDonald’s navigates this crisis, consumer trust and public health remain paramount considerations for the company moving forward.
In conclusion, it is evident that food safety incidents can have significant repercussions on businesses, both in terms of financial losses and reputational damage. Companies must prioritise stringent quality control measures to safeguard the well-being of their customers and maintain trust in their brand.
