Princess Anne and Dignitaries Commemorate 200th Anniversary of Edinburgh’s Pioneering Fire Service
Princess Anne and other dignitaries attended a special service in Edinburgh to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). The ceremony at St Giles’ Cathedral brought together SFRS staff, politicians, and guests from across the UK to honour the establishment of the world’s first municipal fire service in Edinburgh in 1824. Earlier in the day, a ceremony was held to re-dedicate a statue of James Braidwood, considered the “father of modern fire services”, highlighting his influential legacy.
James Braidwood, who was appointed as the first master of fire engines at SFRS, played a pivotal role in shaping firefighting practices not just in Scotland but also in London, where he helped form the London Fire Engine Establishment, later known as the London Fire Brigade. The rededication of his statue, behind the cathedral, was led by SFRS chief officer Ross Haggart, followed by a civic reception hosted by Edinburgh City Council at the City Chambers.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Mr. Haggart remarked, “Today we marked a milestone in the history of fire and rescue services, not only here in Scotland, but across the world. The establishment of the first municipal fire service in Edinburgh and the leadership of James Braidwood laid the foundations for modern firefighting techniques and organizations.” The service at St Giles’ Cathedral also saw speeches from Mr. Braidwood’s descendant, Diana Hamilton Jones, and MSP Siobhian Brown, acknowledging the historic moment and the dedication of firefighters past and present.
The celebrations will continue throughout the year, with events planned at the Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage in Edinburgh.
