Poor sleep may age the brain by nearly three years, scientists say

Poor sleep has been flagged by scientists as a factor that may contribute to brain ageing, with the potential to accelerate the process by nearly three years. A study involving scans of close to 600 middle-aged individuals revealed that poor sleep quality was linked to poorer brain health in the years following. Even after adjusting for variables like age, sex, high blood pressure, and diabetes, the researchers found a significant association between bad sleep and compromised brain health.

Kristine Yaffe, a member of the American Academy of Neurology from the University of California San Francisco, emphasised the importance of addressing sleep issues early on to maintain brain health. Recommendations included maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, regular exercise, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, and employing relaxation techniques. The study, published in the journal Neurology, followed participants with an average age of 40 who completed sleep questionnaires at the beginning and again five years later.

The questionnaire focused on various sleep characteristics such as short sleep duration, poor sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, early awakenings, and daytime sleepiness. Individuals were categorised into low, middle, or high groups depending on the number of poor sleep characteristics they exhibited. Brain scans conducted 15 years later showed that those in the middle group had brains that appeared 1.6 years older on average than those in the low group, while the high group had brains that seemed 2.6 years older on average.

Dr Clemence Cavailles, also from the University of California San Francisco, pointed out the potential long-term impacts of poor sleep on brain health, as the study suggested nearly three years of accelerated brain ageing due to bad sleep habits in middle age. Furthermore, another study published in Neurology indicated that good sleep quality, physical activity, a healthy diet, and not smoking could lower the risk of stroke, dementia, and depression later in life.

The research, based on data from the UK Biobank involving over 316,000 adults, highlighted the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in middle age to positively impact brain health in the future. Dr Santiago Clocchiatti-Tuozzo, study author from Yale University, emphasised the importance of brain health for overall well-being and highlighted the potential benefits of making healthy lifestyle choices early on.
