A stunning Highland hotel that harnesses power from the River Ness and solar energy has clinched a prestigious global green energy award. The four-star Glen Mhor Hotel in Inverness, which relies on large water source heat pumps and solar panels, was commended for its outstanding commitment to sustainability at the inaugural World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards. The award ceremony took place amidst the lush rainforest of Belize, Central America on Friday.
The 126-room hotel, home to the Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery, was honoured with a special commendation award in the World’s Leading Sustainable Energy Efficiency Initiative category. Additionally, it was a finalist in the World Leading Sustainable Water and Waste Innovation and World’s Leading Sustainable Employer categories. Judges lauded the Glen Mhor for its pioneering approach to sustainability, highlighted by the establishment of a groundbreaking £8 million energy facility in 2022.
Victoria Erasmus, Co-Owner and Sustainability Director, accepted the award on behalf of the hotel at the event in San Ignacio, Belize. Speaking about the recognition, Erasmus expressed pride in how sustainability is deeply ingrained in every aspect of the business, emphasising their dedication to transforming operations with a focus on sustainability, fair work practices, and inclusivity. She added that representing a family-run business among global hospitality leaders was a true honour and a valuable learning experience that will shape the hotel’s future climate action plans.
Situated along the scenic banks of the River Ness, the Glen Mhor Hotel, with its 146 employees, offsets approximately 250 tons of carbon emissions annually through its use of renewable energy sources, which also power the production of single malt whisky and craft beer. By integrating solar panels, the hotel aims to eliminate gas usage entirely by the year’s end.
