The US Postal Service has announced that all mail processing centers in regions of Florida and North Carolina impacted by recent hurricanes have resumed operations. This update was provided as part of a virtual briefing to reassure voters and election officials about the Postal Service’s readiness to handle mail-in ballots ahead of the upcoming November 5 election.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy previously stated that the Postal Service was making significant efforts to ensure even ballots sent out late would reach election offices on time. Despite facing challenges such as Hurricane Helene in late September and Hurricane Milton this month, the Postal Service reported that 99.9% of election-related mail was delivered within seven days across the country. Additionally, 99.7% of election-related mail was delivered within three days during the 2020 presidential election.
Steven Monteith, an executive vice president and chief marketing officer at the Postal Service, reassured that all processing centers in North Carolina and Florida were operational as of Tuesday. While some addresses in these states remain inaccessible for mail delivery, efforts are being made to minimize disruptions.
In North Carolina, where early in-person voting has seen a strong turnout, measures have been implemented to support voters affected by the storms. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has extended early voting in certain counties and adjusted deadlines for mail-in ballots.
