Goldfish crackers are giving the snack a new ‘adult’ name

Goldfish crackers have undergone a rebranding effort to target a more mature audience by giving the beloved snack a new name. The iconic Goldfish crackers will now be known as “Chilean Sea Bass”, starting on Wednesday, October 23. The Pepperidge Farm snack, known for its baked cheddar crackers shaped like fish with smiles, aims to show that adults can also enjoy this fun snack.

The rebranding initiative was announced to expand the appeal of Goldfish beyond just being a lunchbox favourite for kids. Danielle Brown, the vice president of Goldfish, explained, “We know Goldfish are a lunchbox icon, but the truth is, they’re loved by snackers of all ages. So, as a playful reminder, we went ahead and gave our iconic cheddar cracker a new, fun, grown-up name.” The newly named “Chilean Sea Bass” Goldfish bags will be available for online purchase in two-packs for $7.38 USD, but only for a limited time until October 30.

Goldfish, a brand under the Campbell Soup Company, shared the news of the name change through social media, eliciting mixed reactions from customers. Some fans embraced the adult-oriented name change, finding it sophisticated and appealing. However, others expressed their loyalty to the original name, with some even questioning the need for a change at all.

This is not the first time Goldfish has revamped its brand to cater to an older demographic. In 2022, the company introduced Goldfish Mega Bites, which were significantly larger than the traditional Goldfish crackers and came in two bold flavours. The move was aimed at offering a snacking experience tailored to adult tastes while retaining its appeal as a family snack.

Overall, the rebranding of Goldfish crackers to “Chilean Sea Bass” reflects an ongoing trend in the snack industry to appeal to a wider range of consumers by introducing new variations and marketing strategies. The response from customers shows the importance of balancing tradition with innovation in branding to resonate with different audience segments. By continuously evolving and adapting to changing consumer preferences, snack brands like Goldfish can stay relevant and enticing in a competitive market landscape.

The rebranding of Goldfish crackers to target adults with the new name “Chilean Sea Bass” showcases the brand’s strategic efforts to expand its consumer base beyond children. While some customers appreciate the novelty and sophistication of the new name, others prefer the traditional branding of the snack. The snack industry’s trend towards reinvention and innovation reflects the competitive nature of the market, where brands must stay agile to meet evolving consumer expectations and preferences.
