Louisiana authorities have initiated the move of a homeless encampment near the Superdome in New Orleans ahead of three upcoming concerts by Taylor Swift that are expected to attract around 150,000 visitors over the weekend. Approximately 75 individuals living in tents under an overpass are being relocated about two blocks away, as confirmed by Louisiana State Police. Advocates have expressed concerns that this forced relocation could disrupt efforts to find permanent housing solutions for those affected, including other homeless individuals in the French Quarter neighbourhood.
A spokesperson for Gov. Jeff Landry justified the move by citing concerns about homelessness and safety, linking the initiative to both the upcoming concerts and the upcoming Super Bowl in February. Emphasising the importance of presenting New Orleans positively on the global stage during these events, the spokesperson stated that safety, particularly in high-traffic areas, was a key consideration in the decision-making process.
The sudden clearance of the encampment has sparked criticism from City Council member Lesli Harris and housing advocates, who were caught off guard by the unexpected timing of the move. Martha Kegel, executive director of Unity of Greater New Orleans, remarked that while moving the encampment may be preferable to disbanding it altogether, the operation was unnecessary, potentially harmful, and a misuse of government resources allocated for homeless support.
Terrence Cobbins, one of the individuals affected by the relocation, expressed discontent, questioning why this action was being taken specifically in preparation for Taylor Swift’s concerts. Meanwhile, City Council President Helena Moreno has called for better coordination between state and city authorities to address homelessness in a more humane and effective manner.
