Couple feel ‘mugged’ on holiday after £100 fine for breaking strict car park rule

A couple on holiday felt aggrieved after receiving a £100 fine for spending just over six minutes in a car park in Weymouth. Steve Cottrell, 63, an NHS nurse from Ruthin, North Wales, and his partner Joy, 56, encountered the issue when they tried to park their car at the Old Town (West) Car Park during their week-long trip.

Steve found the contactless payment system at the ticket machine broken and deemed the parking prices too high, prompting them to leave in search of an alternative spot. Upon returning home, they discovered a £100 fine from Parkingeye for exceeding the car park’s “five-minute grace period” by just over a minute.

Despite Steve’s appeals being rejected initially, the company eventually cancelled the charge as a gesture of goodwill months later. Steve expressed his discontentment, calling the situation a feeling of being “mugged” for such a minor time overrun.

In a bid to challenge the fine, Steve reached out to MPs and even considered legal implications if the fine escalated. Parkingeye defended their decision, citing clear signage and warning of charges for overstaying the grace period. However, they ultimately waived the fine, emphasising the importance of adhering to parking regulations.

Steve and Joy’s holiday experience serves as a cautionary tale for motorists regarding vigilance in adhering to parking rules to avoid unexpected penalties. The incident highlights the necessity of clear communication between car park operators and patrons to prevent misunderstandings and disputes. Being mindful of parking regulations can prevent unwanted fines and ensure a stress-free holiday experience.
