Renowned director Tim Burton has revealed his decision to steer clear of making any more superhero movies, despite the success he experienced with his previous ventures in the genre. The visionary filmmaker, known for his unique and eccentric style, notably directed two Batman films starring Michael Keaton that were blockbusters in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) were groundbreaking in their time, grossing over $600 million (£462 million) collectively worldwide. However, in a recent interview with the BBC, when asked if he would consider returning to the superhero genre, Burton promptly responded with a firm “no.”
Reflecting on his past experiences, Burton explained, “It felt new at the time. There was pressure because it was a big movie and it was a different interpretation of comic books. So that was pressure, but it wasn’t the pressure that you would experience now.”
Despite his success with Batman, Burton also had a brief stint working on a Superman film titled Superman Lives, which unfortunately never came to fruition due to financial struggles and creative disagreements. Some footage of Nicolas Cage as Superman from this project surfaced years later, with the actor expressing disapproval of its use in subsequent productions.
In recent times, Burton has found success with his film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to his 1988 cult classic. Despite mixed critical reviews, the movie surpassed expectations at the box office, raking in $435 million (£335 million) globally. This achievement solidifies Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as Burton’s third-highest-grossing film, trailing behind his adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland.
