A Scottish drug kingpin, Christopher Smith, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for orchestrating a drug distribution network from his prison cell. Smith, aged 34, underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour but was only partially successful. Smith pleaded guilty to directing and organizing the supply of controlled drugs from within HMP Edinburgh and various locations in Scotland between March 2018 and November 2019. His associates in the operation, Iain MacKenzie, Kieran Shand, Darren Duncan, and Ruth Wardhaugh, all based in Inverness, were also named. Prosecutors revealed that Smith was found in possession of several mobile phones in prison and was directing the sale and distribution of controlled drugs through these devices, even ordering drugs to be delivered to the prison.
The unraveling of Smith’s operation began when police in Skye received a tip-off about drug activity involving Darren Duncan and Kieran Shand. The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of messages directing drug supply and debt enforcement, ultimately exposing Smith’s involvement. Further incidents, including a fatal crash involving one of the operation’s members, led to the recovery of more incriminating evidence, such as drug-related content on mobile phones linking back to Smith.
In court, Smith was sentenced to over seven years in prison, backdated to May 24, and was also subjected to a Serious Crime Prevention Order for three years. This order restricts his associations with criminals and requires him to report financial transactions and travel plans to the police.
