$1 Billion Raised for Lebanon at Paris Conference – But Ceasefire Remains Elusive
Around $1 billion (£772 million) has been raised at a conference in Paris to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and support its army. The conference, attended by 70 government delegations and 15 international organisations, aimed to provide aid to up to one million displaced individuals in Lebanon. France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, urged Israel to cease fire and focus on diplomacy, emphasising the importance of a temporary truce proposal put forward by France and the US.
The funds raised, including $300 million from Washington, will primarily support displaced individuals with food, healthcare, and education. Additionally, $200 million will be allocated to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to maintain internal stability and uphold U.N. Security Council resolution 1701. Nonetheless, the ceasefire remains challenging to achieve, with ongoing Israeli airstrikes causing further casualties in Lebanon.
The recent Israeli airstrike that killed three Lebanese soldiers during a rescue mission in the south of the country adds to the already grim situation.
