A mother has issued a warning after her daughter suffered second-degree burns while attempting to glue on fake nails. In a video shared on TikTok, Jessica Klick revealed how her 11-year-old daughter Sienna was at a friend’s house when they decided to experiment with some fake nails that her friend had received as a gift.
During the application of one of the fake nails, a few drops of glue accidentally came into contact with Sienna’s cotton sock. Klick explained in the video that “Apparently, nail glue reacts with cotton and wool and causes instantaneous heat. It caused a severe second-degree burn on my daughter’s foot.” She then shared a photo showing her daughter’s burnt skin, which appeared raw around the ankle.
Fortunately, the friend’s mother was nearby and acted quickly, cutting off the sock and rinsing the burn until Klick could arrive. They applied a gauze bandage around the burn, as seen in a photo shared by the TikToker.
The video garnered over 141,000 views and 600 comments on TikTok, with Klick using the platform to stress the importance of supervising children when using beauty products. She also raised awareness about potential chemical reactions between glue and fabrics like cotton and wool.
Following the incident, experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics have highlighted the risks associated with improper use of household products such as glue and nail care items. They emphasised the potential for harm from chemical burns caused by adhesives and stressed the necessity of adult supervision when children are handling such products.
In an interview with People, Klick recounted how she was informed of her daughter’s injury while she was in the shower, and rushed to the scene to find Sienna in tears. Although most of the burn has healed over the past month, a sensitive area remains open and requires ongoing care. Sienna, while experiencing less pain now, still finds the spot extremely tender to the touch.
Klick expressed her desire to educate parents about the risks involved in allowing children to use fake nails unsupervised. She received positive feedback for raising awareness on TikTok, with many parents expressing gratitude for the information shared and some sharing similar experiences.
