A groundbreaking surgical technique has been developed in Scotland, allowing surgeons to remove brain tumours the size of apples through patients’ eyebrows. Consultant neurosurgeon Anastasios Giamouriadis of NHS Grampian has pioneered this innovative approach, which significantly reduces scarring compared to traditional craniotomies.
By adapting keyhole surgery methods, Mr. Giamouriadis can now tackle much larger tumours at the front and middle of the brain. This new technique not only minimizes scarring but also reduces the duration of the operation, leading to quicker recovery times for patients. So far, Mr. Giamouriadis and his team have successfully performed this procedure on 48 patients, many of whom were able to return home just a day after surgery.
One such patient is Doreen Adams, 75, from Aberdeen, who underwent the procedure and described feeling “wonderful” upon waking up. Having previously undergone an unsuccessful craniotomy abroad, Ms. Adams placed her trust in Mr. Giamouriadis and was relieved by the outcome. She experienced minimal post-operative effects and was amazed at her swift recovery.
Mr. Giamouriadis highlighted the emotional aspect of his work, expressing how rewarding it is to witness patients’ gratitude and immediate improvement post-surgery. Looking ahead, he aims to use virtual reality technology to train other surgeons in this groundbreaking technique, working closely with the University of Aberdeen on developing a simulation for training purposes.
