A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the shooting deaths of his parents and three siblings in Washington state, as reported by The Independent. The tragic incident took place at the family’s residence east of Seattle.
According to court documents released on Thursday, the teenager initially attempted to blame the killings on his younger brother. However, one of his sisters, who survived the attack by pretending to be dead, managed to escape to a neighbour’s house and inform the authorities of the true perpetrator.
The boy has been charged with five counts of aggravated murder in juvenile court. A hearing will be held to determine whether the case will be transferred to adult court in accordance with Washington state law.
The surviving 11-year-old sister revealed that the accused had recently faced academic difficulties and had access to the handgun used in the shooting, which belonged to their father. She also disclosed that he was the only one aware of the code to the lock box where the firearm was stored.
The victims have been identified by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office as Sarah Humiston, 42, Mark Humiston, 43, and their children Katheryn Humiston, 7, Joshua Humiston, 9, and Benjamin Humiston, 13.
The teenager called 911 on Monday, claiming that his 13-year-old brother had committed the murders due to disciplinary issues. However, a neighbour later contacted law enforcement after the injured 11-year-old girl escaped and recounted that her older brother was the actual assailant.
Upon arrival, authorities found the bodies inside the residence and took the 15-year-old into custody. The surviving sister was treated for injuries at a Seattle hospital and has since been discharged.
The accused waived his right to appear in court on Tuesday and is set to attend a hearing on Friday afternoon. Notably, his defence attorneys stated that he has no prior criminal record. The teenager’s legal representatives have yet to respond to requests for comment on the charges.
