SNL creator Lorne Michaels says Shane Gillis firing was forced by NBC

SNL founder Lorne Michaels reveals Shane Gillis’ dismissal was mandated by NBC

Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind Saturday Night Live, has disclosed that he was compelled by NBC to dismiss comedian Shane Gillis from the show. Gillis was axed in 2019 right after it was announced he would be joining the cast due to public outrage over his history of racist and homophobic remarks. Despite never appearing in an episode, Gillis returned as a guest host in February 2024 and light-heartedly addressed his abrupt departure in his opening monologue.

Michaels, who established SNL in 1975 and has been closely involved with the show since 1985, revealed that the decision to terminate Gillis did not originate from him. The 79-year-old stated to the Wall Street Journal, “That was very strong from the people in charge. And obviously I was not on that side, but I understood it.” Michaels admitted to staying in touch with Gillis following the incident and expressed frustration over the situation, believing in Gillis’ potential.

In response to Gillis’ firing, an SNL spokesperson issued a statement expressing remorse for not being aware of his past offensive comments prior to hiring him. The statement emphasised the show’s commitment to showcasing diverse viewpoints and voices.

Following his dismissal, Gillis took to Twitter to assert his comedic talent and express gratitude for the opportunity while understanding the decision made by SNL. Despite the setback, Gillis has thrived in the comedy industry, releasing a Netflix comedy special, “Beautiful Dogs,” in 2023 and debuting a sitcom titled “Tires” on the same platform.

In the aftermath of the controversy surrounding Shane Gillis’ firing from Saturday Night Live, it is clear that the comedian has successfully rebounded and carved out a thriving career. Despite the setbacks, Gillis’ resilience and talent have propelled him to new heights in the comedy world. The recognition of diverse voices in the entertainment industry remains paramount, as showcased by the swift actions taken by SNL in response to public backlash. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and growth in the pursuit of creating inclusive and engaging content for audiences worldwide.
