Militant Attack Claims Lives of 10 Security Personnel in Northwest Pakistan
At least 10 Pakistan frontier police personnel lost their lives in a fierce gun battle during a militant attack in northwest Pakistan, authorities confirmed on Friday. The attack occurred near a security outpost in Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province overnight on Thursday, leaving several other security forces injured, according to local police official Abdul Rauf.
Reports indicate that a large group of militants launched the assault on the outpost, targeting members of the frontier constabulary security force. Despite suffering casualties, the assailants managed to escape with their dead and wounded comrades when reinforcements were dispatched to the security post in the town of Draban.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, denounced the attack, honouring the fallen security personnel and extending condolences to their families. The Islamist militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the deadly assault.
The TTP, a significant regional adversary of the Taliban operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan, stated that the attack was in retaliation for the recent killing of one of its senior leaders, Ustad Qureshi, by Pakistani security forces. Qureshi, identified as a senior TTP commander, was among nine individuals eliminated in an intelligence-based operation that also neutralised two suicide bombers in the Bajaur district bordering Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s military forces have been engaged in targeted operations against the TTP, leading to the elimination of a total of 19 insurgents within 24 hours in separate incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur and Mianwali city in eastern Punjab. The TTP has reportedly intensified its activities since the Taliban took control in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US-led international troops in 2021.
While the TTP is distinct from the Afghan Taliban, it has professed allegiance to the Afghan group now governing Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities have accused the Afghan Taliban of harboring TTP militants near the border, a claim refuted by the Taliban leadership.
