Adults waiting for their Adult Disability Payment (ADP) claims in Scotland are experiencing longer processing times under the SNP Government. The average wait for processing applications has increased from 49 days to 61 days, leaving vulnerable individuals awaiting crucial financial support. ADP, designed to replace the Personal Independence Payment, offers additional financial assistance to those with disabilities or long-term health issues.
The target processing time set by Social Security Scotland, the agency responsible for devolved benefits, used to be between eight to ten weeks. However, this target has been removed from their website, indicating a change in processing expectations. Recent data reveals a rise in median average processing times, with 50% of applications in July processed within three months, down from 63% in April. Additionally, the percentage of cases taking 141 days or more to process has slightly increased over time.
In response to the prolonged delays, Labour MSP Paul O’Kane has raised concerns about the impact on disabled individuals awaiting support. He criticises the SNP Government for failing to deliver on its promises of a fairer social security system, leaving disabled individuals in a state of uncertainty. O’Kane urges the government to address these delays promptly to ensure that disabled Scots receive the necessary support without unnecessary delays.
In a recent statement, SNP Cabinet Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville reassured that the recruitment freeze in the government does not affect the staff directly involved in making benefit decisions, emphasizing the flexibility of the workforce to manage varying workloads. Somerville acknowledges the need for ongoing improvements to enhance processing times for ADP and other benefits.
With increasing concerns over delays in processing ADP claims, the Scottish government faces pressure to address the issue promptly and ensure timely access to vital financial support for individuals with disabilities. The focus should be on streamlining processes and providing efficient services to meet the needs of those relying on ADP for their well-being.
