Man jailed after ‘gun’ scare outside social work office
A man has been sentenced to 22 months in jail after causing a scare with what appeared to be a firearm outside a social work office. The incident took place at Regent House in Hamilton, where 23-year-old James Rundell brandished a BB gun on December 4. Despite the ‘weapon’ turning out to be a toy bought for his nephew, Rundell’s aggressive and erratic behaviour led to his arrest and subsequent court appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Prosecutor Lewis Devoy revealed that Rundell had displayed concerning behaviour while waiting to see a social worker at the council offices, including handling the toy gun and pellets. A passing motorist witnessed Rundell pointing the gun in a shooting position, causing fear, before he concealed the item and returned to the building. Police were called to the scene, where staff confirmed the gun was not real, leading to Rundell’s arrest on Low Waters Road.
During the court proceedings, Rundell’s defence lawyer cited mental health issues as a contributing factor to his actions, explaining that the toy gun was purchased for a minimal amount and used for target practice outside the office. Despite the misunderstanding and lack of intent to harm or distress others, Rundell received a 22-month prison sentence, retroactively applied from his arrest date.
