More plane seats are now available out of the UK compared to before the pandemic, according to new data. The aviation industry faced a massive blow in 2020 and subsequent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with numerous flights being canceled, and passenger numbers dwindling. However, there has been a gradual recovery in the industry, with airlines bouncing back as travel restrictions eased and people sought to resume holiday plans.
Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that the availability of plane seats in the UK has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. During the upcoming October half term in 2024, approximately 27,194 flights are scheduled to depart from UK airports, offering over 4.9 million seats. This marks a five percent increase compared to the same period in 2019, where only 4.6 million seats were available.
The increase in available seats can be attributed to airlines introducing larger aircraft to their fleets departing from the UK. While plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport are in the pipeline to accommodate the growing demand for departures and arrivals, current measures include the deployment of bigger planes to meet capacity requirements. The average number of seats per flight during the October half term has risen from 165.5 in 2019 to 180.8 in 2024.
Despite the industry’s recovery, flight departures are still four percent lower than in 2019. Cirium notes that the surge in post-pandemic travel demand has stabilized as more time has elapsed since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak. However, the increased capacity due to larger planes means that passenger numbers are likely to be high, especially on Friday, which is projected to be the busiest day for departures during half term.
Popular holiday destinations for UK families during this period include Spanish coastal cities like Alicante and Malaga, along with city breaks in Amsterdam, Dublin, and Paris. EasyJet is expected to be the most utilized airline during half term, with the highest number of departures from Heathrow Airport.
Heathrow Airport anticipates handling a record-breaking 83.8 million passengers in 2024, averaging 230,000 passengers per day. The airport also reported significant profits in the first nine months of the year. As the travel industry continues to rebound, these statistics indicate a positive trend for air travel out of the UK.
