North Carolina Governor Greenlights Over £600 Million in Hurricane Helene Recovery Funding
North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper, has given the green light for more than £600 million in disaster recovery funding on Friday to aid western North Carolina after the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The decision came after legislators passed the recovery bill the day before.
This funding marks the second legislative effort to support recovery in western North Carolina, following an initial relief package of £273 million from the General Assembly earlier in the month. The governor’s office has estimated damages and recovery needs in the region to be around £53 billion after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc.
Governor Cooper emphasised the urgent necessity for substantial investments to enable a full recovery in western North Carolina, considering it the most severe storm the state has ever experienced. The devastation caused by Helene includes 1,400 landslides, over 160 damaged water and sewer systems, and significant disruptions to transportation networks, affecting more than 6,000 miles of roads, and over 1,000 bridges and culverts.
Reportedly, North Carolina has recorded 98 deaths as a result of the storm. The latest recovery bill, passed by the Republican-controlled legislature, includes allocations of £50 million for small business loans, £100 million for local governments for water repairs, and £5 million for mental health resources for public school students.
However, the agreed-upon amount falls far short of the £3.9 billion initially requested by Governor Cooper to support businesses, agriculture, and utility repairs. Republican legislative leaders have indicated that the governor’s funding request will be reviewed in the coming weeks, with plans for the General Assembly to reconvene on November 19.
In addition to the financial aids, legislators also passed a bill requiring the establishment of at least one early in-person voting site for every 30,000 registered voters in 13 western North Carolina counties at the earliest possible time.
