Sarah Hyland makes rare comment about past abusive relationship: ‘The PTSD stays’

Sarah Hyland Opens Up About Past Abusive Relationship and Struggles with PTSD

Actress Sarah Hyland recently spoke out about her experience with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from an abusive relationship in the past. The 33-year-old star of “Modern Family” delved into the emotions of self-guilt that continue to affect her, even more than a decade after the abusive relationship occurred.

In an interview with Variety published on October 24, Hyland expressed how the PTSD lingers in a place deep within her soul where she feels responsible for the abuse, constantly questioning if she could have done something differently to avoid it. She candidly shared, “It’s almost like you don’t wanna talk about it anymore. You want it to be done, and that’s that. I completely understand the dissociation pattern of it.”

Hyland disclosed how she still feels “triggered” at times, highlighting that she has not fully recovered from the trauma she went through. She believes her journey resonates with many other women who have faced similar abusive situations, expressing, “I am very much guilty about it myself… until something happens where I’m triggered, and I didn’t realize that part of myself had been healed.”

The actor acknowledged that healing from such experiences may never be complete for her or any woman who has been through similar situations. She emphasized the lasting impact it has on one’s soul, likening it to a scar that doesn’t fade, stating that she is continuing to work on healing and showing love towards that emotional wound.

Although Hyland did not name her former partner, she had previously obtained a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend and co-star Matt Prokop in September 2014. Hyland had accused Prokop of abusive behavior during their four-year relationship, including choking and verbal abuse, leading her to fear for her safety.

Reflecting on her journey, Hyland shared how her dog had been a source of comfort during difficult times, noting the potential of pets being used as tools in manipulative tactics within abusive relationships. She also highlighted her involvement in Purina’s Purple Leash Program, which aims to provide resources and support to survivors of abusive relationships by making domestic shelters pet-friendly.

Hyland’s co-star from “Modern Family,” Julie Bowen, also discussed her role in supporting Hyland during her toxic relationship, underscoring the importance of being there for loved ones in times of need.
