The number of small boat migrants crossing the English Channel this year has surpassed the total for 2023, according to new government data. The figures, released on Saturday, revealed that the total number of migrant crossings in 2024 has now exceeded last year’s total of 29,437. On Friday alone, 424 individuals made the journey across the Channel, bringing this year’s total to 29,578 so far.
While the numbers for 2024 are higher than those for 2023, they still remain considerably lower than the peak reached in 2022, when 45,728 people undertook the risky voyage. The recent data comes after the French coastguard reported rescuing 76 migrants from three boats on Thursday as they encountered difficulties while attempting to cross the Channel.
Tragically, recent incidents have highlighted the dangers of the journey, with three people losing their lives when a boat sank while trying to reach the UK, and another baby dying in a similar incident the previous week. The French coastguard, which has recorded 48 migrant deaths thus far in 2024, reiterated warnings about the hazardous conditions in the Dover Strait, known for its challenging waters.
Migrant charities have expressed concerns about the escalating risks involved in the crossings, as individuals are pushed further out along the French coast to evade heightened law enforcement measures. People smugglers are also cramming more migrants onto each dinghy in a bid to increase their profits. Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to implement stricter measures to dismantle the criminal gangs facilitating the crossings, aiming to reduce the number of people undertaking the perilous journey.
However, former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, a contender for the Tory leadership, criticised Labour’s approach, stating that the country is now vulnerable to smuggling gangs, which could result in more asylum accommodations and potentially dangerous individuals on the streets.
