Passenger dies after cruise ship hit by force 11 winds in Bay of Biscay
A tragic incident occurred onboard the Spirit of Discovery cruise ship when it was struck by force 11 winds in the Bay of Biscay, resulting in the death of a passenger. The incident, which took place on November 4, 2023, left over 100 guests injured, with eight individuals requiring hospitalisation upon the ship’s arrival at Portsmouth in Hampshire.
According to a report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), the vessel, operated by Saga Cruises, had to alter its course due to adverse weather conditions, leading to the cancellation of a planned stop in Las Palmas. As the ship headed towards La Corona, the decision was made to return to the UK after experiencing propulsion issues in severe weather, causing the ship to abruptly veer to the left and come to a sudden stop.
The MAIB interim report disclosed that at the time of the incident, the Spirit of Discovery was carrying 943 passengers and 503 crew members. The vessel encountered storm-force conditions and very high sea states, resulting in the loss of propulsion and significant passenger injuries. Despite the crew’s efforts to restart the propulsion system, the challenging conditions persisted until the following day when the ship could resume its journey.
Sadly, one of the injured passengers who received medical treatment in hospital subsequently passed away from their injuries. The MAIB investigation is nearing completion, with a full report to be issued for consultation with relevant parties involved in the incident.
In response to the tragedy, Saga Cruises expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and offered full refunds to all guests onboard the affected cruise. They are cooperating with the MAIB investigation to understand the causes of the vessel’s propulsion failure and the onboard response to the emergency.
The safety and well-being of passengers remain a top priority for cruise operators, and thorough investigations are essential to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Insights and Summary:
Cruise ship incidents involving severe weather conditions highlight the importance of maritime safety protocols and emergency response procedures. The tragic death of a passenger underscores the risks associated with adverse weather at sea and the need for cruise operators to prioritise passenger safety above all else. As investigations continue into the incident, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the maritime environment and the critical role of crew members in ensuring the welfare of passengers during challenging situations.
