Campaigners in Bridge of Allan are rejoicing as a valued green space is officially transferred to the community. The Sunnylaw Action Group was established to protect the land amidst fears of potential development. Earlier this year, the group successfully secured a community buyout bid, much to the delight of supporters. Expressing gratitude to the community, a spokesperson announced, “With huge thanks to the community of Bridge of Allan, we are delighted to confirm that the community bid for ownership of Sunnylaw has now concluded.” The purchase was finalized this week, marking a significant achievement for the campaigners.
Amanda Coulthard, chair of Bridge of Allan Community Council, acknowledged the crucial role residents played in the success of the community purchase. She highlighted the various ways in which community members supported the cause, from offering financial donations to joining the action group. The land is now owned by the community through Discover Bridge of Allan, the local Development Trust, ensuring that locals have a say in decisions regarding its use.
Euan Bain, chair of Discover Bridge of Allan, commended the residents for their dedication to preserving and enhancing the community. He praised the generosity of individual donors and emphasized the ongoing community input in shaping the future of Sunnylaw meadow. Green councillor Alasdair Tollemache expressed his delight at the completion of the community purchase and looks forward to seeing how the land will benefit the community through future development plans.
Originally intended for auction with a guide price of £47,500, the land was successfully acquired through the community buyout process with no involvement from Stirling Council in the sale. The successful acquisition of this green space by the community showcases the commitment and unity of Bridge of Allan residents in safeguarding their local environment and ensuring it remains a cherished community asset.
