In Dumfriesshire, a pumpkin paradise awaits just in time for Hallowe’en at Uppercleuch Farm on the Applegirth Estate near Lockerbie. Tenant farmers Stuart and Chloe Graham have brought back their popular seasonal picking fest named The Patch for the third year running. The 366-acre farm has been transformed into a vibrant pumpkin patch where families can select their own pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns and take part in farmyard activities that are more exciting than ever.
The Grahams initially planted 800 pumpkin plants in June 2022 and expanded to 1,600 plants this year to meet the increasing demand from visitors. Despite challenges due to rainy weather affecting pumpkin growth, they have supplemented their stock with additional pumpkins to ensure everyone has a chance to pick their favourite. Chloe Graham, managing farm life alongside her two sons, expressed delight in welcoming back familiar faces and new visitors to The Patch.
Limited parking and pre-booking arrangements create an intimate and exclusive atmosphere for visitors, allowing them to fully enjoy all the activities without long queues. In addition to pumpkin picking, the farm offers a range of outdoor and indoor activities for all ages, from farmyard games to pumpkin painting and tractor rides. The Patch is not just a spot for children’s lanterns but also aims to cater to those interested in cooking with pumpkins, with freshly cut pumpkins available for purchase.
The Grahams have been proactive in diversifying their farm activities to adapt to the changing landscape of agriculture in Scotland. Chloe Graham, a qualified baby massage instructor, initiated a successful business called Little Lambs on the farm, offering classes for parents and young children in a warm and friendly environment. Future plans include public experience days to educate and promote sustainable food production as well as initiatives to encourage more people to consider farming.
As they continue to innovate and expand their offerings, the Grahams are committed to providing a unique and wholesome experience for visitors to Uppercleuch Farm.
