Welsh Mother with Incurable Breast Cancer Unable to Access Life-Extending Drug in Scotland
Rachel Davies, a 40-year-old mother from Swansea, has been battling stage 4 breast cancer for the past three years. Despite undergoing mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, she received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to her bones and could not be cured. The cancer then progressed to her lungs and liver, leading to a diagnosis of secondary cancer.
In a cruel twist of fate, while NHS Scotland and 19 other European countries offer patients access to Enhertu, a drug specifically for treating advanced HER2-low breast cancer, NHS England does not provide the drug due to its high cost. Despite efforts to access the drug through compassionate funding with NICE, Rachel has been unsuccessful and is left facing the dilemma of either privately funding the treatment or accepting her fate.
Rachel expresses the emotional and logistical challenges of potentially relocating to Scotland to access the drug, away from her support network and family. She believes that Enhertu could be the missing link in her treatment, offering hope for a longer life. Each three-week dose of the drug privately would cost her thousands of pounds, a financial burden she cannot ignore.
