A man was caught with a knife in an East Renfrewshire street and given a robust response by none other than his own mother. Jonathan Liddell was observed on public space CCTV carrying a large knife in Barrhead’s Newton Avenue on May 29 last year, with no valid reason or legal authority for possession. The 32-year-old’s mother spotted him with the bladed weapon, promptly seized it from him, and then delivered a slap across his face.
Upon being made aware of Liddell’s actions captured on CCTV, the police were alerted and subsequently detained him. Prosecutor Matt Piskorz detailed the sequence of events at Paisley Sheriff Court, stating that officers responded to the CCTV footage, arrested Liddell on-site, confiscated the knife, and processed him without any comment in response to caution and charge.
During the court proceedings, the prosecutor displayed the significant black-handled knife as evidence. Liddell’s defense agent, Kevin Brady, urged the court to request a comprehensive set of reports. Brady highlighted Liddell’s troubled past, citing a conviction from when he was 13 due to alcohol abuse, but emphasized that Liddell had since transformed his life. Furthermore, it was revealed that Liddell’s mother had intervened by snatching the knife from him in the street, administering a corrective slap in the process.
Acknowledging the severity of carrying a knife in a public place, Sheriff Amel Elfallah expressed concern but opted to defer sentencing until October 29 to allow for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. Liddell, residing on Braeside Drive in Glasgow, had his bail extended in the interim.
