A dispute over a parking space in Salsburgh escalated into violence when a man attacked his neighbour. Darren McGhee, 51, claimed he acted in defense of his son after the male neighbour threatened him. McGhee appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court and admitted to assaulting the man, causing severe injury, on Main Street in the village on July 30 the previous year.
The prosecutor, Annette Ward, described how the victim heard shouting and banging on his front door before McGhee punched him. The altercation continued inside the property, with both men exchanging punches. The victim fell back on the stairs as McGhee proceeded to kick him in the head. Police officers later found significant bloodstains at the scene, with the victim sustaining injuries to his nose, eye, and lip, requiring dental treatment.
McGhee was arrested and explained to the police that the altercation stemmed from a parking space dispute and his need to defend himself and his son. Despite having no prior convictions, McGhee admitted to drinking before the incident. Sheriff Scott Pattison deferred sentencing until December for further background reports.
