British woman escapes Spain floods moments before being swept away

A British woman narrowly escaped being swept away by floods in Spain after making a split-second decision to abandon her car. Karen Loftus, along with her husband, found themselves in a life-threatening situation during the torrential weather conditions in Valencia. The couple, who hails from Dorset, was travelling on the AP-7 motorway towards their holiday home in Alicante when disaster struck. Witnessing a bridge collapsing in front of them, Karen, aged 62 and the chief executive of the UK-based charity Community Action Network, recounted how the water quickly rose inside their car, leaving them with no option but to exit through the windows as the doors could not be opened due to the high water pressure.

After narrowly escaping, the couple sought refuge in a lorry but lost everything they had, including their car and possessions dating back two decades. The death toll in the floods has surpassed 90, with more casualties expected as entire towns are submerged, cars swept away, and people left stranded in their homes in what can only be described as apocalyptic scenes. Among the casualties is a British man who succumbed to hypothermia. The Spanish government has declared three days of mourning following what is deemed the country’s worst natural disaster in over 50 years.

Ricardo Gabaldón, the mayor of Utiel near Valencia, described the harrowing experience of being trapped, with water levels reaching up to 3 metres in some areas. Rescue efforts involving over 1,100 soldiers and emergency response units are ongoing, with a crisis committee established by Spain’s central government to coordinate the operations. Survivors like Javier Berenguer, who narrowly escaped his flooded bakery by seeking refuge on the first floor, have shared tales of devastation as they face the loss of their livelihoods.

The resilience and determination of those affected by the Spanish floods serve as a poignant reminder of human strength in the face of adversity. Amidst the chaos and destruction, stories of survival and bravery continue to emerge, highlighting the importance of solidarity and support in times of crisis. As communities come together to rebuild and recover, the spirit of resilience shines through, offering hope and inspiration in the midst of tragedy.
