A troubling case unfolded in Bristol Crown Court as a monstrous couple, Tom Kember, 27, and Katherine Reilly, 25, were found guilty of causing catastrophic injuries to a baby, leaving her severely disabled. The injuries inflicted on the infant were described as equivalent to those seen after a high-speed car crash or a fall from a significant height. The baby girl, who was born prematurely in 2019, was discovered unresponsive at an address in Taunton, Somerset, just ten days after being released from the hospital on January 14, 2020.
Paramedics noted bruising to her temples upon arrival and raised concerns with the staff at Musgrove Park Hospital. Shockingly, Kember and Reilly absconded from the hospital while the infant was still receiving medical attention, packing away her belongings. Internet searches made by Kember, including queries such as “what happens if u hit a baby’s face” and “can a baby be sick if it gets hit”, raised further alarm. The court was told that Kember’s unsettling searches continued on January 13 as they visited a fast-food outlet, where his phone was used to look up “if baby hits its head does the baby sleep a lot”.
Tragically, it wasn’t until 1.20 am on January 14 that Kember finally called the 111 service. Further disturbing evidence emerged as it was revealed that Kember searched online for “can I get done for abusing … baby” on the same day. Kember was ultimately convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while Reilly was found guilty of child cruelty. Judge Julian Lambert labelled their actions in court as “monstrous”. Kember has been remanded in custody, while Reilly has been bailed pending sentencing on January 24, 2025.
The now four-year-old child, who has been adopted by foster parents since she was four months old, suffered traumatic brain injuries that have left her non-verbal, visually impaired, experiencing multiple daily seizures, and with other complex needs. Detective Chief Inspector Roger Doxsey, who spearheaded the investigation, expressed the distress caused by the case and highlighted the focus of the abusers on evading consequences rather than seeking help for the child.
