Wishaw Woman Volunteers in Kenya for Charity Mission
A Wishaw woman, Fiona McCall, recently shared her experiences of a charity mission to Kenya aimed at assisting some of the world’s most impoverished communities. Fiona dedicated two weeks to working with Project Nakuru, where she participated in building classrooms, digging a well, distributing food parcels, and providing essential equipment to local hospitals and schools in need. Accompanying Fiona on this impactful journey were 20-year-old Morgan Hooper from Wishaw and 28-year-old Chloe Brown from Motherwell.
Reflecting on the mission, Fiona expressed her gratitude for having Morgan and Chloe by her side. She highlighted the positive impact they were able to make during their time in Kenya, including constructing a new classroom and kitchen for two schools, as well as providing clothing, shoes, and food parcels to the students. Fiona shared, “We managed to get a couple of street kids into school and pay for their tuition for the coming year, which was incredibly rewarding.”
In addition to aiding schools, Fiona and the Project Nakuru team delivered much-needed supplies to a local hospital. However, the most fulfilling part of their mission was assisting villagers in building a well, which required digging down to 63 meters before reaching water. Fiona recalled the excitement of seeing the well completed and a pump attached, knowing that it would significantly benefit the community of Nakuru in the future.
Prior to their trip, Fiona and the team fundraised tirelessly throughout the year, organising charity events such as bingo nights, raffles, and even skydives. She expressed her gratitude to the people of Wishaw for their unwavering support, noting that every contribution, no matter how small, made a significant difference. For instance, a simple initiative of collecting spare change raised £900, proving that even the smallest gestures can have a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.
