New Scientific Research Reveals Scotland’s Hotspots for Sharks and Rays
New findings from a study conducted by NatureScot have uncovered the distribution of extinction-threatened sharks and rays around the coast of Scotland. The research focused on nine species, revealing that seven of them prefer depths of over 100m, bringing them closer to shore and into lochs along the west coast, where deep trenches are present. Other species with preferences for shallower depths were also observed on the eastern side of the country in the North Sea.
Researchers at NatureScot compared the key areas where sharks and rays are commonly found to locations where industrial fishing activities, such as prawn trawling and scallop dredging, pose a risk of accidentally entangling these species as unwanted “bycatch.” This analysis aims to support conservation efforts and reduce such incidents in the future.
Dr. Jane Dodd, a specialist at NatureScot, emphasised the significance of this research in enhancing understanding of the habitats and vulnerabilities of sharks, skates, and rays in Scotland. These species face threats from historical overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change, making conservation efforts crucial to their survival.
The study assessed the sensitivity of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) to various fishing methods and identified potential hotspots for bycatch in prawn and scallop fisheries. By predicting areas where these species are most prevalent and where bycatch is likely to occur, conservation measures can be strategically implemented to protect these threatened marine creatures.
This research is expected to contribute to the development of an elasmobranch action plan for Scotland and influence policies aimed at safeguarding these vulnerable fish species. All sharks and rays are listed on the European OSPAR catalog of Threatened and Declining Species, underscoring the urgency of conservation efforts in Scottish waters.
